Auston Matthews Will Stay With Leafs
I don’t actually know that of course. Matthews himself probably doesn’t even know. But the MASSIVE monkey on the Toronto Maple Leafs back right now, and the number one question on every fans mind, is "Will Auston Matthews Re-Sign?"
The main reason I think Matthews will return is financial: The Toronto Maple Leafs have made sure to clear the cap space for him. If any other team is to make Matthews an offer, the Leafs are sure to match it. Not only that but they will also front load the contract AND give him the bulk of his earnings in guaranteed signing bonuses AND give him the eighth year as only they can do.
Make no mistake about it, Auston Matthews will be the highest paid player in the league soon. If it’s money Matthews wants, it’s money Matthews will get. And that's why I think Matthews will re-sign with the Leafs: money.
Lots and lots and lots of money.
Personally I think Matthews should talk to the Coyote's owner about buying in to a piece of the ownership pie. I think it would be great for the team, for Matthews, for the NHL, and for the fans. I think it would be great for everyone.
Except for the Toronto Maple Leafs that is.
Having watched Kyle Dubas, who is currently operating as a lame duck GM, operate this team for years, I have prepared myself for virtually anything stupid he might do next.
Including lose Matthews.
