You Just Think They Are

Wimpy, Wimpy, Wimpy

This current version of the Toronto Maple Leafs has faced a lot of heat for failing to advance past the first round of the playoffs a record breaking six times in a row, with one of the main reasons provided for all that losing being that they are too soft.

Fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs point to William Nylander's lack of physical engagement, and refusal to go into the corners, as evidence the core leadership of this team are the biggest group of pusillanimous players in the league.

But is it true?

Are the Toronto Maple Leafs a soft team?

Anymore.

Recently it has been reported the Leafs are trying to ditch their soft reputation. Watching them play this year they appear more physical in games. The stats seem to support this as well:

2022/23 - 23rd in hits

2021/22 - 24th in hits

2020/21 - 27th in hits

2019/20 - 29th in hits

2018/19 - 29th in hits

If you like watching hockey players punch each other in their stupid ugly faces, the team appears to be headed in the right direction. Thank God for that, because, good Lord, was this ever a pacifist group before.

They might still be losers.

Or they might not. But fans can be sure of one thing: Their favourite team won't go down without a fight this year.
