PENALTY KILL SYSTEMS

PK METRICS & PITFALLS IN EVALUATING SUCCESS

The strength of a team’s penalty killing, in my opinion, is more important than the strength of a team’s power play.

The element of a penalty kill that is of foremost importance is the neutral zone forecheck of the shorthanded team.

Preventing the power play team from getting into the attacking zone should be the first focus of the penalty killers.

Otherwise, the PK is largely dependent upon the goalie as his performance seems to have a large impact on whether the penalty kill is successful.

Because the penalty kill is often so dependent upon goaltending, identifying specific ways each team’s play affects their goalie’s Sv% is very important.

A LOOK AT SPECIAL TEAMS

Many teams use a basic 4 player box as almost a home base formation during the penalty kill. The penalty kill units then morph into more specialized formations depending upon where the puck is and the formation used by the power play they are facing.

The Diamond Force penalty kill formation allows fairly static coverage by two players and dynamic coverage by the other two players.

Note: The 1-3-1 PP formation, when well executed, can be very effective against a Czech Press penalty killing formation.

Chicago ran a variation of a Tandem Pressure neutral zone forecheck against Anaheim’s power play breakout.

Forwards Wide neutral zone forecheck against this breakout during their playoff series.

The Forwards Wide formation the Rangers used works to take away passes to the targets in the zone and those moving into the neutral zone.

The goal with this is to force D1 to make a bad pass or skate the puck out of the zone where PK3 and PK4 are waiting to meet him. Tampa Bay countered this by using a good passing defenseman as D1 and having F3 in the neutral zone on a path that took him in behind PK3 and PK4 at mid-ice.
