SHOOTOUT
there is no evidence that any goalie or shooter is significantly different from the average.
OVERTIME & SHOOTOUTS ARE A JOKE
The most likely outcome of a five-minute overtime period is a tie, which drags overall winning percentage towards the .500 mark, no matter how good a team is.
While there was some relationship in the past between a team’s overall record and its OT record, the introduction of the shootout has completely severed that link.
Why play for 2 points in OT against a better team when you can go to the shootout and have a better chance of winning?
In addition, the completely fluky nature of the shootout gives weaker teams an incentive to play for a tie in OT, so it’s likely that overtime winning percentage is regressed even more than 90%.
SCORING IN OVERTIME
What’s surprising is that teams do actually play for the win somewhat in overtime – we can see that the scoring rate doubles by the end of the extra period.
SHOOTOUT IS A CRAPSHOOT
the NHL Shootout is a crapshoot.
The randomness (or noise) of the shootout is completely dominating the skill of the players.
This is not to say that there is not skill involved in the shootout. Rather the skill is vastly overwhelmed by the noise and, so, the shootout is a crapshoot.
GOING FIRST (2 ARTICLES)
It does not matter whether a team goes first or second.
SCORING FIRST
From the data 921 of 1138 or 80.9% of shootouts have been won by the team that scores first
SHOOTERS NEED TO KEEP GOALIES GUESSING
As a shooter in the shootout, if you are unpredictable, the goalie won’t know what is coming and will play you straight up.
If, however, you have one prominent move and a lesser-used secondary option, the goalie is likely to know that and cheat, allowing you to score more often on your secondary option, which overall will increase your effectiveness
