QoC 2 - Quality Of Teammates

Writer: tmlblueandwhitetmlblueandwhite

MEASURING QoT

(Aug 2008)

Since players will play different roles on their teams, different players will share ice time with different quality of linemates.

This effect can be addressed in the same manner as with quality of opposition. The average on/off ice adjusted +/- can be calculated averaged over the time each teammate is played with.

One or two exceptional teammates will boost a quality of teammate ranking significantly.

Quality of teammates can be calculated from on/off ice adjusted +/- values.

WOWY'S

(July 2013)

As the name implies, a WOWY separates a player’s statistics out into two categories, while they’re playing with the player you’re separating him from, and while they’re not playing with that player.

The WOWY statistic is designed to show what players are driving possession and offense on lines or defense pairings, and which players are passengers, it’s really as simple as that.

MLHS - WOWY'S

(Aug 2014)

WOWY statistics typically consists of three groups for every pair of players. If we have players P1 and P2 then the three groups are statistics when P1 and P2 are on the ice together, statistics when P1 is on the ice without P2 and statistics where P2 is on the ice without P1.

In theory any statistic could be looked at in a WOWY analysis but the statistics that are commonly available are GF20, GA20, GF%, CF20, CA20, and CF%.

WOWY is important because good players should be able to make their teammates better. So, if the statistics show that your teammates consistently perform better when they are playing with you than when they are not it is probably a good sign that you are doing something well when you are on the ice. Conversely, if they are performing consistently worse with you than apart from you it is a pretty strong indication that you are holding back your teammates.

·        If every teammate has better stats with a player than apart from that player, it is a good sign that the player is having a positive impact on his teams results.

·        Conversely, if every teammate has worse stats with a player than apart from that player it is a good sign that the player is having a negative impact on his team’s results.
