PROVIDING SUPPORT
NEAR OR FAR SUPPORT
(Sept 2021)
Close Support – A great rule of thumb is that when you should give close support to a teammate if they are under heavy pressure.
Far Support - If your teammate has time/space … get away, far away. This ensures they will have as little pressure as possible. If you go close then you’re bringing your defender with you and adding pressure
Presence away from the play stretches the defense’s resources and stretches them to their limits where they have to make decisions.
WEAK SIDE/STRONG SIDE
(Oct 10, 2021)
Weak Side Support
When playing weak side puck support (or high player), the key is to stay wide or get wide. The ultimate goal is to stretch the area the defense must cover. From there, shuffling or micro-movements should be used to find and keep passing lanes open.
Strong Side Support - If you’re on the strong side (side of the ice that the puck is on), it’s best to go toward the puck.
To simplify, if you move away you’re simply putting more defenders between you and your teammate. While you’re also inviting more pressure on the puck and creating very limited options for the puck carrier.
