DO YOU NEEED GREAT GOALIE TO BUILD DEFENSE
Do you need a great goalie to build a defensive system?
Does an elite defensive system require a great goalie, or is this reasoning false?
claiming that a goalie is responsible for a defensive system is completely wrong.
Playing a defensive system does not indicate that there is a strong goalie in the net. On the contrary, a strong defensive system is most needed and most beneficial when there is a weak goalie in the net.
Great defensive systems can hide weak goaltenders, just as poor defensive systems can make excellent goalies look average.
DO DEFENSEMEN INFLUENCE SV%
(July 2009)
While the defensive difference with the “Worse +/-“ defensemen out of the lineup was negligible, the teams of the “Better +/-“ defensemen allowed 15.5 fewer goals per 82 games when they were playing. One-quarter of this change was due to reducing the volume of shots allowed, but the rest is due to better save percentage.
EFFECT OF DEFENSE ON SV%
(May 2010)
The ability of defensemen to affect shot quality against does exist in the population, but it is so small that we will never be able to sensibly apply it to any player in particular
DEFENDERS EFFECT ON SV%
(Feb 2012)
there were more than twice as many really really good on-ice save percentages for defensemen than we would expect by chance alone
The defensemen that are best at improving on-ice save percentage are often defensemen we consider to be defensive defensemen
It seems that players can, to some degree, influence on-ice save percentage. We can’t credit, or blame, the goalies all the time.
DMEN HAVE NO CONTROL OVER SV%
Ultimately, defenders fail in being able to sustainably improve or worsen their goaltender’s save percentage.
for the most part a goaltender owns their save percentage
IMPACT DEFENSE HAS ON GOALTENDING STATS
This confirms something we’ve always known: not only is the goal of defenses to limit shot attempts (which we can measure with corsi), but perhaps just as importantly, limit the chances the other team gets in high percentage areas.
DMEN CAN INFLUENCE SV%
the idea that defenders can’t is just a bit far fetched. A defender that turns the puck over a lot at key moments has to have a negative impact on his goalies save percentage. Conversely one who doesn’t would boost his goalies save percentage.
