CAN A PLAYER INFLUENCE TEAMMATES SH%
Lemieux's teammates were eight percent more likely to score on a given shot when he was playing,
I'd posit that Lemieux's playmaking contribution is about as large as we're going to consistently find - something on the order of 7-8% - and we can use it to bound the impact that a player can truly have on the quality of his teammates' scoring chances.
PLAYERS INFLUENCE ON TEAMMATES SH%
(Dec 2011)
Driving shooting percentage is a more significant reason why elite players are so good offensively than driving corsi events.
The point still stands, without considering shooting percentages we aren’t getting anywhere close to having a complete analysis of a players impact on the game.
DO PLAYMAKERS DRIVE TEAMMATES SH%
The data suggests that players can influence their teammates' shooting percentages, but only the very best playmakers can do it and even then only to a modest degree. It remains safe to assume for the vast majority of players that when they post an above-average on-ice shooting percentage, it is not the result of their individual passing skills.
QUANTIFYING PLAYERS IMPACT ON TEAMMATE SH%
(July 17, 2012)
Top-end playmakers can boost their teammates' shooting percentage by something like 1%, good for an extra 5 goals or so per year.
analysts focus on shot differential rather than shooting percentages:
Four years' worth of data is enough to identify the truly high-end shooting talents, but for the vast majority of players we can wait until the end of their careers and still not know for sure whether a high on-ice shooting percentage reflected anything other than random chance.
This second tier of skill players gets four times as much benefit from driving possession as from driving shooting percentage -- nearly as much as the elite players get from driving shooting percentages
For a very small number of elite playmakers, the ability to drive shooting percentage can be a major component of their value. For the vast majority of the league, driving possession is a more significant and more reproducible path to success..
IMPORTANCE OF PLAYERS IMPACT ON TEAMMATE SH%
(Sept 2012)
All totaled there were 222 players in the study, 26 boosted their line mates shooting percentage by at least 1.5% and 53 players boosted their line mates shooting percentage by at least 1.0%.
It is theoretically possibly that a players ability to boost his line mates shooting percentage has a greater impact on goal scoring than the players ability to drive fenwick for events.
That is actually a fairly strong relationship between a players assist rate and the players ability to boost line mates shooting percentages. It really isn’t unexpected, but it is good to see. Playmaking is a valuable skill in generating offense.
